TFI Relief Efforts at the Mt. Merapi Volcano Disaster in Central Java
Several teams of TFI members mobilized just days after the first eruption of the Merapi volcano in central Java to help victims and evacuees of the explosion.
Trauma Healing for Earthquake Victims in Padang West Sumatra
One of the common side-effects of natural disasters such as the massive earthquake in West Sumatra is fear and trauma. Usually the most seriously affected are children, especially those who have lost members of their family, friends, or their homes.
Organic Desalination
We have facilitated the desalinating of 60 acres of agricultural land in Kandakaddu in Cuddalore District. This land was rendered useless by the flooding of tsunami salt water. The desalination process was a completely organic process.
School Renovation and Village Rebuilding
The Family India, with the help of several donor agencies was able to provide 59 new houses to the residents of a tsunami-affected village in Tamil Nadu called Ponanthittu. Each of these houses has a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and staircase leading up to the terrace.
Providing Tools to Boat Workers
Not only did the tsunami ravage the lives of the fishermen, it also hit the lives of those who earn a living by providing services to the fishing industry. The Family India has been helping these allied workers by making it possible for them to be self-reliant once again.
Community Boat Project
Thousands upon thousands of fishermen lost their boats in the tsunami, thereby losing the one means they had of supporting themselves and their families. We soon realized that simply giving them relief supplies was not enough.
Emotional Support to Children
The tsunami exacted a heavy emotional toll on thousands of children who were traumatized by the disaster. Many of them don’t want to go anywhere near the sea again, others have recurring nightmares, and most live in a state of fear.
Immediate Relief
The devastation that faced our team of Family volunteers when we traveled to Tamil Nadu after the South Asian Tsunami was overwhelming! The first task that lay before us was to provide food and essential household items to those who had lost everything they owned. They needed to eat!

In the early morning of May 27, a major earthquake shook the central Java city of Yogyakarta and the surrounding area, claiming more than 5,800 lives and leaving many thousands homeless.
