Ibadan Dental Project

From Family Care newsletter issue #103

We recently carried out another small-scale healthcare initiative in Ibadan, Oyo State. In the Ibadan School for the Deaf we held a free dental programme which treated 203 children and teenagers from the school for the deaf and dumb, as well as the 'hearing' teenagers who also attend the secondary school on the premises. A dental surgeon and his team of seven dentists and dental nurses from Ibadan volunteered for the three-day programme and administered a variety of dental treatments ranging from scaling and polishing, to fillings and extractions. All the children were given toothbrushes, toothpaste, and some other toiletry items to help them along the road to good dental hygiene.

Project statistics:

  • Total Patients: 117
  • Extractions: 11
  • Scaling and Polishing: 71
  • Fillings: 4
  • Oral Hygiene Instruction: 117
