Life Caring Orphanage
Recently we began working with the “Life Caring Orphanage”, which cares for orphans from babyhood until they are grown and able to care for themselves. We’ve recently delivered 13 brand new mattresses for the orphans and donated a freezer, and other food items.
Mother and Baby Support Group Highlights
Micro Businesses Bring Economic Empowerment We received sponsorship to initiate micro businesses for the members of our Mother’s Club for HIV positive women and their babies. We supplied the women with products of their choice to the value of R1,000 each.
Mother and Baby Support Group
Through this project we support a total of 19 HIV-positive mothers and their babies.
Murals Brighten Lives
For several months our team accompanied one of our volunteers, Nyx Martinez to the main government hospital in Kampala.
Ray of Hope
There is so much pain and confusion right now in the townships, but we wanted to share a ray of hope which we experienced this month. Our full-time counselor and peer educator, Barbara, had phoned and told us to expect a surprise this Wednesday morning.
Mother's Club Activities
In the past few months the local clinic referred more mothers to our Mother's Club for young HIV-positive mothers and their babies. We now have 17 mothers and babies, and it is encouraging to see them able to talk about their status and make short-term and long-term plans.
Christmas at an Orphanage
During Christmas 2007, we participated in a Christmas program for an orphanage in Enugu State. The venue, food, and drinks we’re all donated by sponsors.
Carpet a Creche Campaign, Diepsloot
Every year we work to upgrade the crèches (childcare facility) in Diepsloot in some way. Most of the babies and toddlers take their naps during the day on cement floors, often with just a thin blanket underneath them. Most crèches have very little carpet.
Christmas/year-end party for orphanages and the disabled
In conjunction with our Family Care office in Port Harcourt, which has a performance group for children, we organized a special Christmas party at the Enugu Cheshire Home for teenagers with polio. We also invited the three orphanages we work with in the region to attend.
Ibadan End-of-Year Programmes
In Ibadan we checked on all our programmes and training courses that were running for the year, making sure that all was in order and ready to restart in 2007. We also held Christmas parties for the Ibadan School for the Deaf and a home for underprivileged, handicapped, and street children.
