Over the years, Family project Family Care Association has developed a range of capacity-building initiatives that contribute to sustainable development. These initiatives teach business skills, research, and communications.

To ensure future sustainability and economic empowerment, knowledge networks must involve training young people and communities in network research and communications and provide microcredit schemes. Family Care recognizes that young people and their communities can and should take active roles in shaping their world. We use the knowledge network approach as a method to engage young people and selected communities in sustainable development research and communications.

The objectives of the IT/computer training centre initiatives are to create:

  • Self-sustaining and scalable demand models
  • Business models that are replicable nationwide
  • Sustainable IT and communications infrastructure
  • Self-sustaining new job/income opportunities
  • Leadership and capacity within the community

Through public-private partnerships, Family Care Association aims to turn communities and underdeveloped urban areas into thriving, self-sustaining economies. Access to technology and education permanently improves the livelihoods of the population by raising literacy rates, creating income, providing access to government services, information technology and education.

IT/computer training centre

October 2006

Through the continued support of the business community, four new computers have been purchased for the IT/computer training centre. These are now fully installed and networked with the existing systems. M-WEB Nigeria also increased our VSAT internet bandwidth at the centre to accommodate the additional computers. As a result of the expansion we have taken on eight new students, with the possibility of accommodating more in the coming months.

We used the introduction of the new computers as an opportunity to give a class to the advanced students on computer installation, as well as to teach the assembly process of computer systems hardware and networking. We also introduced newly-acquired specialized educational and tutorial DVD software for various IT and programmeme study topics, which is enabling the students to study and learn on their own.
