Due to continued success and high attendance, Family Care Nigeria has expanded the Family Care IT/Computer Training Center for the handicapped in Enugu, southeastern Nigeria. Previously the center had two rooms that served as classrooms by day and an Internet café after school hours—the latter being the center’s means of support. Now there are three rooms and new equipment.
We held a graduation ceremony for 15 students. A local celebrity from Radio Nigeria MCed the event. Each graduate received a certificate in desktop publishing and said a few words of appreciation for having been able to take the course.
One surprise at the ceremony was the announcement of scholarships for the top two graduates at the international Aptech Computer College in Lagos State. The scholarships are valued at N560,000 (about US$4,500) each.
The other graduates have now started on their second one-year course and look forward to further advancing their computer hardware and software literacy—and possibly winning one of next year’s scholarships.
We have also started expanding the poultry farm that Family Care Nigeria set up at the Guardian Angel Motherless Babies Home three years ago. The staff there has shown that they can run the farm efficiently, and a local construction company was so impressed that it is now helping to double the size of the farm to accommodate the growing number of broilers, layers, and turkeys. The farm has been a great asset in supporting the orphanage, as well as benefiting the children’s diets by giving them extra protein.
